SpaceX Collaborates with Apple and Globalstar to Enhance Emergency Satellite Connectivity for iPhones

Apple’s Emergency SOS service is set to get a boost via satellite, thanks to a partnership with SpaceX and Globalstar. This collaboration aims to improve the Emergency SOS feature, making it even more reliable for iPhone users.

Enhanced Satellite Connectivity for iPhone Emergency SOS

Apple introduced the Emergency SOS feature via satellite with the iPhone 14 series in 2022, allowing users to contact emergency services when outside cellular or Wi-Fi range. To further enhance this service, Apple is working with SpaceX and Globalstar to launch new satellites.

Globalstar’s $64 Million Investment

Globalstar is investing $64 million in SpaceX to launch these satellites, with payments spread over several years until their expected launch in 2025. This substantial investment underscores the commitment to improving the Emergency SOS feature.

Changes in Pricing Ahead

When Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, they promised two years of free access. However, it’s anticipated that a fee may be introduced after this initial period, considering Apple’s investments in enhancing the service.

Globalstar’s Commitment to Apple

Globalstar has pledged to allocate 85% of its existing and future network capacity to Apple’s iPhones. They will also manage all aspects of the network, ensuring quality and coverage standards are met.

A History of Collaboration

This collaboration isn’t the first between Apple, Globalstar, and SpaceX. In 2022, Apple invested $450 million in the infrastructure supporting Emergency SOS via satellite, mainly benefitting Globalstar. Additionally, Globalstar purchased $327 million worth of satellite equipment with a $252 million loan from Apple.

Current Availability and Future Expansion

Emergency SOS via satellite is currently available in several countries, including the United States, Canada, and various European nations. This partnership aims to expand and enhance the service for users worldwide, further emphasizing Apple’s commitment to user safety.
