India to Build Its Own AI Models Like ChatGPT & DeepSeek in 10 Months, Backed by 18,693 GPUs and Govt Subsidy

India is taking a significant leap in artificial intelligence (AI) by working on its own foundational AI models, similar to ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed this ambitious initiative at an event hosted by the Indian AI Mission at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi. He stated that India’s AI models would be developed within 8 to 10 months, focusing on affordability and efficiency.

For the past one-and-a-half years, Indian researchers have been building a robust AI ecosystem to support this effort. These AI models will be designed specifically for Indian users, addressing linguistic diversity and eliminating biases to foster inclusivity.

Key Points

India is developing foundational AI models tailored for linguistic and contextual diversity.

The government will use approximately 18,693 GPUs, with 10,000 already deployed.

AI model usage will cost around ₹100 per hour after a 40% government subsidy.

The initiative aims to create cost-effective, efficient, and inclusive AI solutions.

IndiaAI Safety Institute will be established to ensure AI security and trust

Computational Infrastructure and Cost Efficiency

India’s AI development will be powered by a massive computational infrastructure, utilizing approximately 18,693 GPUs. Of these, 10,000 GPUs have already been deployed, with the remaining 8,693 to be added soon. To compare, DeepSeek was trained using around 2,000 GPUs, while ChatGPT utilized nearly 25,000 GPUs.

One of the standout aspects of this project is its cost efficiency. The minister noted that while leading global AI models cost around $2.5 to $3 (₹216 to ₹260 approx.) per hour, India’s AI model will cost only ₹100 per hour, thanks to a 40% government subsidy. Additionally, attractive half-yearly and annual pricing plans will make the technology even more accessible.

Establishment of the IndiaAI Safety Institute

To ensure AI security and trust, the government is also launching the IndiaAI Safety Institute. This institute will collaborate with academia, startups, industry leaders, and government bodies to create AI frameworks that prioritize safety, security, and transparency. The institute will focus on research and development tailored to India’s socio-economic, cultural, and linguistic diversity.

Conclusion

India’s push to develop its own foundational AI models marks a significant milestone in the country’s technological advancement. With a strong focus on computational efficiency, affordability, and inclusivity, this initiative aims to position India as a key player in the AI industry. The development of the IndiaAI Safety Institute further underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring responsible AI deployment.
