Indian Government Expands Aadhaar Authentication for Public & Private Entities Under New Amendment

The Indian government has broadened access to Aadhaar authentication, allowing both public and private entities to use the system for identity verification. The move comes under the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025, which was notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

This expansion aims to boost efficiency, security, and transparency in sectors such as e-commerce, healthcare, travel, and finance, enabling businesses and organizations to authenticate users seamlessly.

How the Approval Process Works

Entities wishing to utilize Aadhaar authentication must:

Submit an application detailing their purpose to the relevant Central or State Government department.

UIDAI will review the request to ensure compliance with regulations.

MeitY will grant final approval based on UIDAI’s recommendations.

Reversing Previous Restrictions

In 2020, the Supreme Court limited private sector access to Aadhaar authentication due to data privacy and security concerns. This new amendment lifts those restrictions while ensuring that only authorized entities can access the authentication service.

Impact on Businesses and Citizens

By expanding Aadhaar authentication, the government aims to:

Enhance security in digital transactions.

Improve access to services through seamless verification.

Foster innovation in various industries.

Reduce identity fraud and streamline authentication processes.

While the expansion offers significant benefits, data privacy and security remain critical concerns. The government is expected to implement strict safeguards to ensure the responsible use of Aadhaar data.
