Qualcomm and Google Announce 8 Years of Android Updates for Snapdragon 8 Elite and Future Snapdragon 8, 7-Series Devices

Qualcomm Technologies, in partnership with Google, has announced an extended Android software and security update program, offering up to eight years of support for select Snapdragon-powered devices. The initiative starts with smartphones featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform and will expand to include future Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 and 7-series chipsets. This move aims to enhance device longevity, improve security, and align with growing global cybersecurity standards.

Key Points

Qualcomm and Google extend Android OS and security updates up to eight years.

The program begins with Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered devices launching with Android 15.

Future Snapdragon 8 and 7-series platforms will also be included.

Reduces OEM burden by leveraging Google’s Project Treble for seamless updates.

Includes two Android Common Kernel (ACK) upgrades to strengthen security.

Qualcomm sees growing OEM interest in adopting extended support.

Legacy Snapdragon platforms are not eligible for this extended program.

Eight Years of Support: A Game-Changer

Qualcomm’s extended update program guarantees up to eight consecutive years of Android OS and security patches. This long-term support ensures that smartphones remain secure and up-to-date, addressing concerns over planned obsolescence and device sustainability.

Reduced OEM Burden for Updates

The program is designed to minimize the effort required by OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in rolling out updates. Thanks to Project Treble, vendor code remains mostly unchanged, making it easier and more cost-effective for manufacturers to provide long-term support.

Security Enhancements and Kernel Updates

To maintain security over the extended support period, Qualcomm’s program includes:

Regular security patches for up to eight years.

Two Android Common Kernel (ACK) upgrades, ensuring compatibility with the latest security advancements.

Compliance with international cybersecurity regulations, strengthening device protection.

Eligible Snapdragon Platforms

The initiative begins with Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered smartphones launching with Android 15 and will later expand to:

Future Snapdragon 8-series platforms

Future Snapdragon 7-series platforms

Next five generations of Qualcomm ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits)

OEMs Have the Final Say

While Qualcomm provides the software support framework, the decision to implement full eight-year updates depends on device manufacturers. Qualcomm reports that several OEMs are already committed to longer software lifecycles, although not all manufacturers may offer the full duration of updates.

What About Older Snapdragon Devices?

Unfortunately, legacy Snapdragon platforms are not eligible for this extended update program. Qualcomm will continue providing software support for these older chipsets through separate arrangements.

Conclusion

Qualcomm and Google’s eight-year Android update policy marks a significant shift in the smartphone industry, promoting device longevity, enhanced security, and cost efficiency for manufacturers. As more OEMs adopt the program, consumers can expect longer-lasting and better-supported Android smartphones in the coming years.

Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, emphasized that this initiative aligns with global demands for extended software support and will significantly improve the Android ecosystem.
