iPhone 17 Series Expected to See Significant Price Hike; New Ultra-Slim ‘Air’ Model to Challenge Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge

Apple is preparing to unveil its iPhone 17 lineup later this year, and according to industry analysts, the upcoming models could carry higher price tags compared to the iPhone 16 series. Alongside the familiar base, Pro, and Pro Max variants, Apple is rumored to introduce a brand-new model — the iPhone 17 Air — designed to rival Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy S25 Edge.

Pricing Hike Driven by Trade Tariffs and Rising Costs

In a research note cited by MacRumors, Jeff Pu, an analyst at GF Securities, revealed that the iPhone 17 series is “likely” to see a price increase over the 2024 lineup. One of the key reasons is the ongoing international trade tariffs, particularly those imposed by the United States on products manufactured in China.

With US-China trade tensions persisting, Apple is accelerating its strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations, expanding production in countries such as India and Vietnam. However, this shift, along with rising component costs, may contribute to a price jump across all variants.

Last month, another market analyst predicted that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro could each see a $50 (roughly ₹4,400) price increase, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max could go up by $100 (roughly ₹8,800).

For reference, the iPhone 16 was launched in the US starting at $799 (roughly ₹70,100), while in India, it started at ₹79,900. The iPhone 16 Pro began at $999 (roughly ₹87,700) in the US and ₹1,19,900 in India.

Introduction of the Slim and Stylish iPhone 17 Air

One of the most anticipated additions to the lineup is the iPhone 17 Air, a premium yet ultra-slim model that could redefine Apple’s design standards. Early reports suggest it will measure just 5.5mm in thickness, making it even thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, which comes in at 5.8mm.

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 6.6-inch ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate, offering smoother animations and an improved viewing experience. This new model is likely aimed at users who value sleek aesthetics without sacrificing performance.

Performance and Camera Upgrades Across the Series

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are tipped to be powered by Apple’s A19 Pro SoC, bringing improved efficiency and higher processing power. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max may feature an even more advanced A19 Pro chip, optimized for professional-grade tasks and advanced AI-driven features.

On the camera front, the iPhone 17 Air may sport a single 48MP Fusion rear camera with performance similar to the iPhone 16’s primary sensor, ensuring high-quality shots in all lighting conditions. For selfies and video calls, it could come with a 24MP front camera, a notable upgrade over previous generations.

Apple’s Strategic Challenges and Market Outlook

Apple’s push to introduce new models like the iPhone 17 Air comes as it faces stiff competition from Samsung and other flagship Android brands. The company’s pricing strategy will be critical, as higher costs could impact adoption in price-sensitive markets.

However, if the iPhone 17 Air delivers on its promises — combining an ultra-slim design, cutting-edge display technology, and strong performance — it could emerge as one of the most desirable smartphones of 2025.
