APAAR ID: Transforming Education with Comprehensive Academic Record Tracking in India

The Government of India is stepping into the future of education with the launch of the APAAR ID, an acronym for ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry.’ This groundbreaking initiative is part of the government’s ‘One Nation, One ID’ program for students, aimed at simplifying the way academic records are tracked and maintained. In this article, we explore the key features and implications of the APAAR Card.

What is APAAR ID and How Does It Work?

APAAR ID is akin to the widely recognized Aadhaar Card. Each student will receive a unique 12-digit number that serves as their academic identity. This number will meticulously document a student’s academic journey, spanning from school to junior college, degree college, and even post-graduation.

The real innovation lies in the integration with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), an official government initiative. When a student completes a semester or course, the credits they earn will be instantly updated in the ABC. These credits are universally recognized and transferable across all Indian universities, offering students unparalleled flexibility in their academic pursuits.

Seamlessly Transfer Credits Across Institutions

One of the primary benefits of the APAAR ID is its capacity to simplify credit transfers. In the current educational landscape, transferring credits from one institution to another can be a cumbersome and time-consuming process. With APAAR, this becomes a breeze. Students can move between schools, colleges, or universities across India without the usual hassles of credit recognition and validation. Currently, over 2.18 crore students have been registered in the ABC from more than 410 academic institutions in India.

Digitized Academic Records

The APAAR ID can be accessed directly through DigiLocker, the government’s digital locker platform. The ID will appear in the Education section of DigiLocker as the ABC ID, offering students easy access to their academic records and history.

Registering for APAAR ID: A Step-By-Step Guide

To register for an APAAR ID, students need to have a valid Aadhaar Card and an account on DigiLocker, which will be used for electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification. Parental consent is also required during registration.

Here’s a quick guide to registering for an APAAR ID:

Visit abc.gov.in and select ‘My Account,’ then choose the ‘Student’ option.

Log in to your DigiLocker account using your credentials.

DigiLocker will request consent to share your Aadhaar Card details with ABC for KYC verification.

Provide the requested academic details such as school/university name, course name, etc.

Save the details and exit the portal.

The data in the APAAR ID is regularly updated by educational institutions. It is crucial to note that APAAR ID is linked directly to the student’s Aadhaar Card, ensuring each student has only one APAAR ID, which is valid for a lifetime.

V. Voluntary Registration with Parental Consent

While the Union Education Ministry has urged educational institutions to embrace APAAR, it’s essential to understand that registration is voluntary, not mandatory. Schools are encouraged to seek parental consent for registration, ensuring that students and their guardians have a say in this academic milestone.

APAAR is a significant step toward the realization of the ‘One Nation, One ID’ vision for students. By streamlining academic records and minimizing the need for multiple mark sheets and documents, it aims to make the student experience smoother and more efficient. As the government pushes the boundaries of educational innovation, the APAAR Card stands as a testament to the commitment to improving access and transparency in education.

Key Points of the APAAR ID Launch:

APAAR ID Introduction: The Government of India has introduced the APAAR ID (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) for students. This identity card is part of the ‘One Nation, One ID’ initiative for students.

Academic Record Tracking: The APAAR ID will be a 12-digit unique number assigned to each student, akin to the Aadhaar card. It will serve as a comprehensive record of a student’s academic journey, from school to post-graduation.

Incorporated Academic Data: The APAAR Card will not only include academic information but also details like scholarships received and credits earned during academic courses. These credits are linked to the Academic Bank of Credits, making them transferable to different universities.

Seamless Credit Transfers: Credits earned by students can be easily transferred across universities and educational institutions in India, simplifying the process for those switching institutions.

DigiLocker Integration: Students can access their APAAR ID and academic records via DigiLocker, making it a digital and easily accessible resource for all their academic data.

Registration Requirements: To register for the APAAR ID, students must have a valid Aadhaar card and a DigiLocker account for eKYC verification. Parental consent is also required during the registration process.

Voluntary Registration: Although encouraged by the Union Education Ministry, registration for the APAAR ID is voluntary, not mandatory. Schools seek parental consent to enroll students into the program. Students may also choose to register themselves.

One Student, One APAAR ID: Each student is assigned a single, unique APAAR ID, linked to their Aadhaar card. This ID is intended to be a lifelong academic record.
