Air India Becomes First Asian Airline to Support Apple AirTag for Real-Time Baggage Tracking

In a significant leap towards enhancing passenger convenience and travel transparency, Air India has officially introduced Apple AirTag integration into its baggage tracking system. This makes Air India the first airline in Asia to offer such a feature, allowing flyers with Apple devices to track their checked-in luggage in real time directly from their smartphones, tablets, or computers.

Enhanced support for lost or delayed baggage recovery

Compatible with Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 and above

A Step Forward in Smart Travel

Air India stated that it processes over 100 million baggage items each year, with an impressive 99.6% delivered on time. However, for the small percentage that may be delayed due to unavoidable circumstances like misrouting or flight transfers, this new AirTag-enabled tracking will serve as a critical recovery tool.

According to Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Air India, this move is part of the airline’s broader digital transformation to make air travel smarter and more reliable.

How Baggage Tracking Works

Passengers can now track their checked-in bags in real time using several platforms:

Mobile App: Go to the “My Trips” section in the Air India app

Website: Visit the “Track My Bags” section on AirIndia.com

Receipt Scan: Scan the barcode on the baggage receipt for instant status updates

This seamless integration with Apple’s Find My network means travelers can follow their bag’s journey from drop-off to carousel.

What to Do If Your Bag Goes Missing

In case a bag doesn’t arrive at the destination, Air India’s system is now better equipped for faster recovery. Here’s how it works:

Report the Baggage Issue

Visit the Air India Baggage Counter at the airport to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).

Share AirTag Location via Apple’s Find My App

Open the app → Tap the AirTag → Generate “Share Item Location” link.

Submit the Link to Air India

On Mobile App: Go to “Customer Support Portal” → “Baggage” → “Lost and Found Check-in Baggage” → Paste the link.

On Website: Visit the same section and attach the AirTag link with your PIR number.

Track the Status

Once submitted, Air India will send an acknowledgment email containing a live baggage tracking link.

Recovery by Airport Teams

If the bag is within the airport, Air India’s ground staff will use the AirTag location to retrieve and deliver it promptly.

Data Privacy Comes First

Air India emphasized that data privacy remains a top priority. Location sharing through AirTag is secure and will:

Automatically disable once the baggage is recovered

Expire in seven days if not manually turned off

Allow passengers to revoke sharing at any point

This ensures peace of mind for travelers who may be concerned about constant tracking.

Feature Availability

This feature is currently available only for passengers using Apple devices running:

iOS 18.2 or later (iPhones)

iPadOS 18.2 or later (iPads)

macOS 15.2 or later (Mac computers)

It offers an innovative solution for modern travelers, combining technology, security, and convenience to elevate the post-pandemic travel experience.

Conclusion

With Apple AirTag support, Air India is setting a new benchmark in digital innovation within the aviation sector. This feature doesn’t just promise better baggage management—it provides passengers with transparency, control, and a significant reduction in stress associated with lost or delayed luggage. As more airlines aim to enhance their customer experience, Air India has taken the lead in making smart travel a reality.

Stay tuned, as more tech-first innovations are expected from the airline in the near future.
